Tail Spins Tricks for Fall and Winter Bass

One of the most overlooked baits in bass fishing, the tail spin (tail spinner) produces amazing fish catches during the Fall and Winter season. While simple in appearance, the bait is incredibly versatile when used with different retrieves. Bass can't resist a well placed tail spinner fished around baitfish! In Today's video Matt explains how to fish the lures, which retrieves work best for different situations, and even shows his confidence baits.

Most anglers consider tail spins to be a deep water lure for schooling bass. While they are incredibly effective in deep water, a tail spin is also at home in the shallows. These baits can be fished in as shallow as a few feet of water around visible cover with a fast, steady retrieve. If the bass are down deep, switching to a slow roll or a pumping retrieve will yield the best results.

Tail spins come in many shapes and sizes. Single treble hook, double hook, even line through offerings are available. Once you learn how to adapt the baits to your fishing conditions the tail spin will become a staple in your cold water bass fishing arsenal. Below is a breakdown of Matt's confidence baits as well as the equipment he uses to consistently land his tail spin fish.

Tail Spinner Tricks For Spring Bass Fishing

The Tail Spin is an overlooked option for Spring bass. Its traditional use is deep water presentations around baitfish and schooling bass. Like many techniques it has been refined in recent years and a variety of new lures have hit the market to help capitalize on the shallow bite, smaller baitfish, short strikes, etc.

If you're still using a tail spinner one dimensionally its time to consider your other options. This bait can be hopped, steadily swam parallel to bottom, jigged, burned, or used to cast extreme distances to busting fish. With so many options its a wonder we don't have a tail spinner tied on every time we hit the lake.

We've found 4 tail spins that fit our fishing style the best. These baits cover all the bases and can fish in a variety of conditions. Below is a break down of the baits as well as the tackle we use to fish tailspins effectively.

The baits...

Use size 4 hook for all baits except the Duo Realis. The duo hooks are extremely small, a size 8 is best.

Fall Bass Fishing with Underspins and Swimbaits

This time of year is all about schooling bass. If you can find the schools, you can catch a ton of fish in a hurry! In this video Matt and Tim head to Lake Berryessa, a fishery they haven't visited in months. They start out working scattered fish but it doesn't take long to locate the schools of offshore, deep water Bass and that's when the fun starts!

The guys use a combination of topwater, finesse swimbaits, and good electronics to initially locate the bass. Once they find the school they begin using a combination of spoons, underspins, swimbaits, and tail spinners to keep the fish fired up.

Offshore bass fishing, especially for suspended fish, is one of the most technical ways to fish. But don't let that scare you, as you can see in this video its not that difficult to get these fish biting.

Hardbaits, Softbaits, and more... Spring Gear Review!

Spring is a great time to try new lures! We try as many as we possibly can and this handful made the cut after months of testing and experimentation.

If you're looking to try something different this Spring, these are all excellent choices. From swimbaits to finesse baits to deep cranks, you're going to like these picks! Here are our thoughts on them...

Megabass Hazedong Swimbait: http://bit.ly/2CIwgzt
Tight Kicking swimbait for an ultra finesse presentation. Works extremely well when slow fishing.

Damiki Armor Shad: http://bit.ly/2KtPDAT
Action lands between the Keitech 2.8 and Hazedong. Ultra versatile and a great alternative if your fish are seeing a lot of anglers throwing the 2.8

Dredger 22.5 Deep Crank: http://bit.ly/2I8xOcA
This Berkley bait goes extremely deep for its size. If you're looking for a bait that dives into similar depths as the 10XD but with half the size, this is the one for you! It also has a unique high-pitch rattle sound that works extremely well.

IMX Pro Crankbait 906 CBR Rod: http://bit.ly/2og0BmK
This rod is great for mid to full size Crankbaits. Virtually anything diving in the 7-20 foot depth range can be thrown on this setup.

Reaction Innovations Shiver Shot: http://bit.ly/2JCpY7S
The bait is a small swimbait profile but with a forked tail. It works great as a dropshot bait as well as a tiny fluke option. This bait is a must try!

Damiki Axe Blade: http://bit.ly/2w2uB9t
The Axe Blade is an incredibly versatile tail spinner. With an extra hook in the back this bait works really well for catching those fish that are just slapping at the bait. With a willow blade instead of a small Colorado its also a different sound and vibration profile than other tail spins.
