Hardbaits, Softbaits, and more... Spring Gear Review!

Spring is a great time to try new lures! We try as many as we possibly can and this handful made the cut after months of testing and experimentation.

If you're looking to try something different this Spring, these are all excellent choices. From swimbaits to finesse baits to deep cranks, you're going to like these picks! Here are our thoughts on them...

Megabass Hazedong Swimbait: http://bit.ly/2CIwgzt
Tight Kicking swimbait for an ultra finesse presentation. Works extremely well when slow fishing.

Damiki Armor Shad: http://bit.ly/2KtPDAT
Action lands between the Keitech 2.8 and Hazedong. Ultra versatile and a great alternative if your fish are seeing a lot of anglers throwing the 2.8

Dredger 22.5 Deep Crank: http://bit.ly/2I8xOcA
This Berkley bait goes extremely deep for its size. If you're looking for a bait that dives into similar depths as the 10XD but with half the size, this is the one for you! It also has a unique high-pitch rattle sound that works extremely well.

IMX Pro Crankbait 906 CBR Rod: http://bit.ly/2og0BmK
This rod is great for mid to full size Crankbaits. Virtually anything diving in the 7-20 foot depth range can be thrown on this setup.

Reaction Innovations Shiver Shot: http://bit.ly/2JCpY7S
The bait is a small swimbait profile but with a forked tail. It works great as a dropshot bait as well as a tiny fluke option. This bait is a must try!

Damiki Axe Blade: http://bit.ly/2w2uB9t
The Axe Blade is an incredibly versatile tail spinner. With an extra hook in the back this bait works really well for catching those fish that are just slapping at the bait. With a willow blade instead of a small Colorado its also a different sound and vibration profile than other tail spins.

Jerkbaits Vs. Swimbaits : Which One Wins?

Matt hits the water with a jerkbait and a small swimbait for a quick evening session. The plan was to return to a school of active bass blowing up on baitfish but that quickly changed. Watch as Matt adapts to the changing conditions and puts together a pattern that produces BIG bites.

Learning to read the water and adapt to changing conditions takes time. Having a solid knowledge of the fishery is a huge bonus but a willingness to change on the fly and try new baits is all that's really required.

The jerkbait and swimbait are both proven producers throughout the Spring. When one is producing small bites the other will often produce larger fish. Don't be afraid to abandon your game plan when its not working and trying something completely different. You never know when you'll switch from catching little fish (or no fish) to having an awesome time on the water!

Underwater Sight Fishing - Which Lures Work Best?

Ever wondered why one lure works better than another? Let's head underwater to see the differences between a variety of swimbaits. As we watch, Tim explains why each bait is effective and how to use it most effectively.

We're sure you've noticed that many youtubers throw small swimbaits for their underwater footage. Wondered why? Its very easy to get a bass interested in a swimbait. Bass are hardwired to defend their nests against predators.
Swimbaits are a perfect imitation of a variety of predators that bass face. However, a swimbait is rarely the best bait for CATCHING the bed fish. For this style of fishing they have an incredibly poor hookup to land ratio. You're much better off using a small swimbait as a tool to aggravate the fish, then using a traditional bait to get the final bite.

The swimbaits...

4.8 exposed - Matt Allen Swimbait Head: http://bit.ly/29RrTYN
Weedless Rigging for all sizes - Owner Flashy Swimmer: http://bit.ly/2e8O4Y7

Additional baits Matt uses for this Aggrevation method...
Castaic 4" and 6": http://bit.ly/2prXuGh
Mattlures U2 Bluegill: http://bit.ly/2s1dqyf
Basstrix 6" Paddletail: http://bit.ly/2aiy7SR
Basstrix Bait Fry Bluegill: http://bit.ly/2dPHA4e

You do not need a dedicated swimbait rod for this technique because you're not actually trying to hook the fish on this setup. However, bait control is key so you do need a very stout "flipping" style rod to control the bait on short casts. Any flipping rod will work but here is our setup...

Rod- Shimano Expride 7'11" XH: http://bit.ly/2nTq9FL
Reel- Shimano Curado 200K 7:1 Ratio: http://bit.ly/2tHewEh
Line- 65 lb Power Pro MaxCuatro: http://bit.ly/2clBRiQ
Leader- Tim- 20 lb Sunline Sniper: http://bit.ly/2p7fxju
            - Matt- 20 lb Maxima Ultragreen: http://bit.ly/2ae97J9

Budget Combo that can handle all of the baits listed above...
Rod- Exage 7'6" Heavy: http://bit.ly/2mGp1Vc
Reel- Shimano Casitas 150: http://bit.ly/2geKxsp
Line- 65 lb Power Pro: http://bit.ly/2aFg46b
Leader- 20 lb Maxima Ultragreen: http://bit.ly/2ae97J9
